What is the American Academy of Clinical Psychology
The American Academy of Clinical
Psychology (AClinP) is the association of clinical psychologists who are recognized
as specialists by virtue of having received Board Certification in Clinical Psychology
from the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).
What this means to you as a patient/client

- Your psychologist has become a Fellow of the Academy of Clinical Psychology.

What is a Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Psychology?
There is a two step
process to become a Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Psychology. The first
step is undergoing a comprehensive examination leading to Board Certification in
Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). With
Board certification, the psychologist is eligible for membership as a Fellow in the
American Academy of Clinical Psychology (FAACP, FAClinP).
What does it mean to be a Fellow?
A Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Psychology is a psychologist who has made significant achievements beyond the mandatory educational requirements of the specialty.
To be educationally qualified for Fellow status requires:
- Basic college undergraduate education and completion of an approved graduate or professional school to earn a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology. It usually takes a minimum of five years to achieve a doctorate.
- Completion of an approved one year internship in clinical psychology. This period of supervised practical experience is concentrated on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness and related problems.
In addition to the educational requirements. Fellow status requires:
- Minimum of three years post-
doctoral experience. - A minimum of two years professionally supervised experience in the practice of Clinical Psychology.
- Detailed credentials review by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).
- Comprehensive oral examination and observed clinical practice by nationally recognized clinical psychology peers under the auspices of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).
- Fellows who are direct service providers will hold state licensure.
The Importance of Board Certification
The American public is accustomed to health care provided by physicians who are board certified. Did you know, though, that being board certified is not required? However, we have grown to expect that when we go to a doctor, that person is board certified. Physicians and psychologists alike are licensed and can legally practice without being board certified. Board certification is an additional, voluntary process that one goes through to demonstrate competency in a specialty area.
The process of licensing psychologists, as with many professions, is based on a review of education, training and experience. It involves taking and passing a written test of knowledge of the field of psychology. The licensure process is intended to address those areas, but it is not designed to assess competency of the professional psychologist in applying what she or he knows. That is why board certification is important.
Dr. Karnilow is Board Certified in Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Psychology.
